6 Interesting Finds in Cagayan Museum, Tuguegarao City, Cagayan Province, Philippines

    The Cagayan Museum was part of our Tuguegarao Traventure last June.  According to Mr. Rey Balisi, our tour guide officer, Cagayan Museum will transfer to a newer building in Tuguegarao by next month.  Here are our 6 Interesting Finds in Cagayan Museum!

1.) The Kammaranan Medallion

     During the Neolithic period (around 7,000 years ago) in Cagayan, the Kammaranan Medallion (a clay pendant) are awarded to soldiers who exhibited extraordinary prowess and leadership skills in their tribes. The Medallion was found in 1972 in an excavation site at Magapit, Lallo, Cagayan.

2.) Callao Metatarsal

     The Callao Metatarsal is the middle toe of the right foot discovered by a team of archaeologists led by Dr. Armand Mijares of the University of the Philippines in an excavation project at Callao Caves, Penablanca, Cagayan in 2007. It is scientifically called the Callao MT3 and was identified a Hominid or a modern human. Uranium-series dating revealed a 67,000 years-old fossil. It is now regarded as the ‘Earliest Human fossil found in Asia Pacific Region.

3.) Our Lady of Piat

    Our Lady of Piat  is a 16th-century paper mache icon of the Virgin Mary. It is the oldest paper mache item in the Philippines. The original artwork is housed in St. Dominic Parish, Cagayan Apayao Road, Centro, Piat, Cagayan, Philippines, 3527

5.) Evidence of Chinese Trade through Cagayan River

      From the Taiwan Strait and Babuyan Channels, the Chinese junk-type boats infiltrated the Cagayan River (longest and largest river in the Philippines) to trade with Cagayanons.

6.) Exhibit of Cagayan Peoples

     Cagayan province comprises of different ethnicities– Ilocanos, Ibanag, Itawit Malawegs, and Agtas. Part of the Museum is the Assinnun (The Indigenous Cagayano Fashion)
