One of the interesting restaurants we have visited in Balanga City is Mesa Feliz, translated as “happy table.” The founders of Mesa Feliz have a long history in the food industry in Balanga, having owned Aurora’s Cuisine, which has greatly contributed to the culinary landscape of the city. One of the highlights in our experience was trying their in-house smoked meats that take anywhere between 8 to 12 hours of supervised cooking, using Mahogany or Santol wood, which imparts a unique and rich flavor profile that sets them apart. Second was savoring their salads and pizzas, which feature vegetables sourced from their organic farm, ensuring freshness and quality in every bite. The ambiance of the restaurant contributes to the overall experience, with a warm and welcoming environment that invites patrons to relax and enjoy their meals. This Cathedral is almost 230 years old. Imagine during the death march of World War II, many prisoners of war passed by this church; what could have been the feeling at that time? The towering walls of the cathedral have silently witnessed the suffering and resilience of countless souls. Its ancient stones seem to echo the prayers and hopes of those who sought solace within its hallowed halls, while the flickering candles illuminated a path of faith amidst the darkness of war. The cathedral not only stands as a reminder of the past but also serves as a symbol of peace and healing in a city shaped by its tumultuous history. 5.) Death March KM44 marker
The Death March is a forced march of the prisoners of war in which they were left to die along the way. The Death March KM44 marker is located in front of the Balanga Cathedral. As the weary soldiers trudged past the imposing cathedral, a complex swirl of emotions enveloped them; despair and hopelessness gripped their hearts as they faced the inevitable end of their journey. Each step was a reminder of their broken spirits and the harrowing conditions they endured, punctuated by fleeting memories of home and the warmth of loved ones now beyond reach. In those final moments, the somber silence of the church loomed large, a stark contrast to the chaos surrounding them, as if it stood as a witness to their suffering, evoking a longing for peace that would soon elude them forever. What was the feeling of the dying soldiers at that time when they passed by this church? Balanga Elementary School houses the Bataan World War II Museum. At a small entrance fee, you can get a glance of some World War II memorabilia on the first floor while you can check on the second floor the memorabilia of the former first lady from Balanga, Mrs. Luz Banzon Magsaysay. 8.) Revisit Some of your Personal Memories about Balanga
As I have lived in Balanga City until I was 5 years old, I have some happy and sad moments when revisiting some sites in the town. It is nice to revisit again the plaza, the market where I used to walk together with my mom and dad, the kindergarten school, and a sentimental visit to the graveyard of my father. Each location brings back a flood of memories—playing tag with friends in the plaza under the sun, the sweet scent of fresh produce in the market, and the comforting sounds of laughter from my kindergarten days. The sight of my father’s grave evokes a deep sense of longing yet also a profound gratitude for the time we shared.
