Our Top 11 Things To Do in Zamboanga City, Philippines

Visiting Zamboanga City is a compelling opportunity to challenge preconceived notions. Initially anticipating potential risks, I have since found the city to be safe, having visited it three times. Despite their penchant for nocturnal festivities, the locals maintain decorum and I felt secure jogging at 3am. The populace exudes kindness and politeness, contrasted with the higher perceived danger in Metro Manila. Here are 11 recommended activities to partake in while in Zamboanga City!

1.) Hotel Staycations

Hotel staycations in Zamboanga City offer a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. With a range of luxurious accommodations to choose from, visitors can indulge in top-notch amenities, breathtaking views, and exceptional hospitality. Whether you’re looking for a serene escape or an exciting urban getaway, Zamboanga City has something for everyone. From stylish boutique hotels in the heart of the city to beachfront resorts with access to pristine white-sand beaches, there’s no shortage of options for a memorable stay. 2.) Attend a Royal Tausug Muslim Wedding

One of the most memorable experiences during my visit to Zamboanga City was attending the wedding of my friend, Princess Nina Bahjin-Imlan, daughter of Sultan Ibrahim Bahjin Shakirullah II of the Royal House of Patikul Sulu. It is worth noting that one of the ethnic groups populating Zamboanga City is the Tausugs. The wedding was exquisitely staged, with a choreographed attendance, the bride carried in a golden carriage by four warriors, traditional Tausug customs, elegant venue design, and delicious food. Particularly noteworthy was the runway set up for the guests. Upon being called, each guest would walk the runway while the speaker narrated their life achievements and family background. This unique tradition left a lasting impression, and I would certainly consider incorporating it into my own wedding one day.

3.) Yakan Village

Near the Zamboanga City Hall, it is possible to board a jeepney (route Upper Calarian) to reach the Yakan Village. The Yakans, also known as Dreamweavers, represent an ethnic group originally hailing from Basilan. Owing to Basilan’s proximity to Zamboanga City, a number of these groups relocated to the vicinity of the city, where they have diligently upheld their tradition of weaving. According to them, it takes several days to produce a 3-meter table runner, for which I paid 1500 PHP (approximately 30 US dollars). (Swipe below photo for more pictures)

 

4.) Fort Pilar

Fort Pilar in Zamboanga City was established as the southern bastion of the Spanish Domain under the governance of Melchor De Vera in 1635. It endured an assault by the Dutch in 1646 and was subsequently deserted as the troops gathered in Manila to repel Chinese Pirates in 1663. The stronghold was reconstructed by the Society of Jesus in 1666 and later refurbished under the stewardship of Juan Sicarra in 1719. In 1720, it was besieged by Dalasi, the King of Sulig, along with 3,000 Moros. Furthermore, it endured cannon fire from the British in 1798 and bore witness to a mutiny by 70 prisoners in 1872. Ultimately abandoned by the Spaniards in 1898, it was subsequently occupied by the Americans under General J.C. Bates in 1899. The stronghold was seized by the Japanese in 1942 before being reclaimed by the Republic of the Philippines on July 4, 1946.

Paseo Del Mar is not only conveniently located just a 5-minute walk from Fort Pilar in Zamboanga City, but it also offers a variety of activities and attractions for locals and visitors alike. In addition to the free morning zumba exercises, the charming port provides access to Sta. Cruz (Pink) Island, known for its picturesque beauty, making it an ideal place to unwind and enjoy the natural surroundings. Furthermore, the surrounding area is dotted with numerous restaurants, serving a diverse range of delicious cuisines, ensuring that everyone can find a culinary delight to suit their preferences. Whether one seeks a tranquil morning exercise, a scenic boat ride to the island, or a delightful culinary experience, Paseo Del Mar truly offers something for everyone.

6.) Gastronomic Adventure

You have the opportunity to explore numerous high-quality locally-owned restaurants and cafes in Zamboanga City. Among our highly recommended options is Dennis Coffee Garden, a renowned establishment that offers a variety of Tausug meals, pastries, and Sulu Coffee (Kahawa Sug). In addition to its delightful culinary offerings, the restaurant actively supports local coffee production, contributing to the sustainability of farming communities in Patikul, Sulu. 7.) Barter

This marketplace serves as a hub for products originating from nearby Southeast Asian countries. Many of the exquisite bags, textiles, chocolates, and other delectable Malaysian and Indonesian food items are currently unavailable in Metro Manila. 8.) RT Lim Boulevard

RT Lim Boulevard in Zamboanga city is a picturesque promenade that captivates visitors with its stunning views of the sunset. The tranquil atmosphere, coupled with the gentle sea breeze, creates a serene ambiance perfect for unwinding and appreciating the beauty of nature. Many locals and tourists flock to this idyllic spot, drawn by the allure of the vibrant colors that paint the sky during twilight. As the sun descends below the horizon, the sky transforms into a canvas of warm oranges, pinks, and purples, casting a mesmerizing glow over the waterfront. Plaza Pershing, with its tranquil ambience and lush surroundings, invites people to pause and contemplate the city’s past and present. The Rizal Monument, a solemn and dignified tribute to the national hero, stands as a reminder of the city’s enduring connection to the broader narrative of the Philippines. The Municipal Hall, a striking architectural marvel, embodies the civic pride and governance of Zamboanga City. Moreover, the grandeur of the Bank of the Philippines Zamboanga reflects the city’s economic vitality and resilience.
