Balete is one of the 11 towns surrounding Taal Lake and Taal Volcano (the world’s smallest volcano). It is neighbor to Mataas na Kahoy, a town famous for glamping. According to some old folks, Balete was called Balete due to a number of Balete trees abundant in the place. Balete is originally a part of Lipa City until June 21, 1969 through Republic Act 5659 creating Balete into a municipality with 13 barangays namely: Alangilan, Calawit, Looc, San Sebastian, Solis, Makina, Sala, Sampalocan, Magapi, Malabanan, Paligawan, Palsara & Poblacion.
