17.) Junk Not Exhibit
Junk Not is an interior design company that specializes in finding creative ways to transform everyday trash and other indigenous materials into functional items. It engages a community of women to be responsible stewards of the environment. Its partner community in Brgy. Alas-as, San Nicolas, Batangas was trained to segregate and clean household wastes. These plastic wastes are then turned into ropes that are weaved into wooden/metal frames to create beautiful furniture or table accents.
The project with the women of Alas-as started in 2014 when DENR PASu-TVPL commissioned Wilhelmina Garcia to conduct a livelihood program in the community. During the training, few women showed interest in collecting their plastic wastes. Eventually, other members of the community decided to take part and join Junk Not’s advocacy. As of 2018, there are 60 women who are actively collecting, segregating, and roping their household wastes. The members are continuously growing as the locals see the need to save their environment.
