Every weekend, we make it a little adventure to step outside Melbourne’s CBD and explore one of Victoria’s many suburbs, discovering cafes and restaurants that catch our eye along the way. This list is a collection of some of the interesting spots we’ve personally tried and enjoyed—it’s by no means a ranking, but simply a reflection of our weekend food journeys. As we don’t (yet!) have the capacity to visit every single top-rated restaurant or café, we’d love to hear from you too—feel free to recommend your favorites so we can add them to our future explorations.

1.) Yan Melbourne

A refined dining spot in the heart of South Yarra where every plate tells a story, Yan Melbourne is truly one of our top restaurant picks in the city. The ambience and service exude elegance, while each dish showcases thoughtful creativity that goes beyond quality and taste. Our favorites — the Murray Cod, squid, sashimi, and coconut ice cream — were all beautifully prepared and bursting with flavor. 2.) Mongkok Tea House

Mongkok Tea House in Camberwell delivers a level of dedication you can genuinely feel, with a team committed to their craft and a menu that showcases remarkable creativity. Their seasonal set menus are a must-try, offering dishes like the clever Brown Butter Pumpkin—so tender and visually deceptive we initially mistook it for pork—as well as the elegant Mastershock Poached Chicken. We also enjoyed the Fresh Pacific Oyster paired with elderflower cranberry vinegar, a combination that felt both delicate and thoughtful. Another standout is the Wattleseed Miso Toothfish, served with charred green peas, confit leeks, pistachio beurre blanc, mizuna, and chive oil. 3.) Boseong Melbourne

Boseong Melbourne, a newly launched semi-fine dining Korean restaurant in Blackburn, Victoria, offers a delightful blend of traditional and modern Korean flavors through its signature menu. Highlights include plum-marinated tomatoes with ricotta cheese, scallop tartare, an array of nine banchan such as prawn and zucchini pancake, seasoned spinach, apple kimchi, and steamed egg with scallop, as well as assorted pancakes, chicken wing dumplings filled with pork, tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties with rice cake inside), seasonal sashimi, sot-bop with beef bone broth, and grilled dry-aged duck with three sauces. To complete the experience, diners can enjoy homemade matcha drinks, vanilla ice cream with Nurunji, and sparkling beverages, making it a must-try spot for food enthusiasts seeking a unique Korean dining experience in Victoria. 4.) Ribs and Rumps Ringwood

Ribs & Rumps in Ringwood is a go-to spot for meat lovers: think flame-grilled ribs, juicy steaks and burgers, all served in a casual, family-friendly atmosphere. The signature ribs are slow-cooked, glazed in their sweet BBQ sauce and finished over an open flame, giving that smoky char everyone looks for. If ribs aren’t your thing, they also offer seafood, vegetarian and salad options — something for most palates. Roccella Bundoora is a restaurant offering Italian cuisine that delights with every dish. Our top favorites would be their Tartufo Pizza, which features a rich truffle paste base complemented by 24-month aged prosciutto, creating an exquisite flavor profile. Additionally, the Pasta alle Vongole showcases fresh clams in a light white wine sauce, making it a perfect choice for seafood lovers. Another highlight is the Calamari Fritti, which is perfectly seasoned and crispy, providing a delightful texture. Each of these dishes pairs beautifully with a glass of Shiraz or Prosecco, enhancing the dining experience and making it truly memorable. 6.) The Groove Train Chirnside Park

The Groove Train in Chirnside Park (239-241 Maroondah Hwy, Shop PAD P4) is a casual yet elegant café-restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a large, diverse all-day menu. Highlights include wood-fired pizzas like lamb fillet and spinach or truffled mushroom, pastas and risottos such as pumpkin and spinach gnocchi, a 300g grass-fed porterhouse steak, burgers, and plenty of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Breakfast is generous with items like chilli scrambled eggs, focaccias, pancakes, and waffles. 7.) The Stampton

We had our breakfast buffet here for 3 days at The Stampton, as this is an in-house restaurant of Novotel Melbourne Preston. The variety of options available was impressive, featuring everything from fresh pastries and seasonal fruits to hot dishes like scrambled eggs and crispy bacon. Each morning, we enjoyed the inviting atmosphere, which was complemented by attentive staff who made sure our experience was nothing short of exceptional. The hotel’s location also provided a perfect start to our day, as we ventured out to explore Melbourne, fully fueled and ready to take on the vibrant city. 9.) Holgate Brewhouse

Holgate Brewhouse is a family-owned, independent brewery located in Woodend, Victoria, Australia. Established in 1999 by Paul and Natasha Holgate, it operates within a historic 19th-century hotel, offering a unique combination of brewery, public bar, restaurant, and accommodation. Visitors can enjoy a diverse range of beers inspired by classic European and American styles, including award-winning selections like the Temptress Chocolate Porter and Mt Macedon Pale Ale. In 2024, Holgate celebrated its 25th anniversary with the “25 Years of Beers” series, featuring special releases and collaborations. The brewhouse also offers brewery tours, providing insights into their brewing process and history. ​ (Swipe below photo for more pictures)

Burnside Coffee is a cozy café situated at 87 Smith Street, Collingwood, on the corner of Smith and Gertrude Streets.Known for its minimalist approach, the café offers a straightforward coffee menu with options like black, with milk, or espresso.  Patrons can enjoy a selection of pastries, fresh salads, and hearty sandwiches, making it a popular spot for both takeaway and casual dining.  The interior features wooden bench seating and handmade low stools and tables, providing a warm and inviting atmosphere.  Burnside Coffee operates from early morning, catering to both early risers and those seeking a relaxed café experience throughout the day. Their arepas are freshly made, crisp on the outside and soft inside, filled generously with savory ingredients like pulled beef, black beans, or cheese. It’s a cheerful spot perfect for brunch or a casual meal, bringing a taste of Venezuela to Melbourne’s north.

My Tho Vietnamese Restaurant on High Street, Preston, is a local favorite known for its fresh, comforting, and authentic Vietnamese dishes. Tasties Café on High Street, Preston, offers a cozy ambience with charming wall paintings and a calm, welcoming atmosphere. The staff are polite and attentive, making the experience even more pleasant. We enjoyed their coffee and pastries, which were both satisfying and well-prepared. Next time, we’re keen to try their pho — a popular choice among other guests that looked absolutely inviting.

The Sporting Globe is one of Australia’s go-to sports bars, with multiple branches nationwide. It’s the perfect place to catch all your favourite sports on big screens while enjoying delicious, familiar comfort food and a great range of drinks. 17.) Burgerooze

Burgerooze has become a local favourite across Victoria, with branches in Whittlesea, Sunbury, Bacchus Marsh, and Gisborne, thanks to its over-the-top gourmet burgers, fun energy, and generous servings. We finally tried their iconic 24K Gold and Black Burger—one of our favourites—alongside their must-try Asian calamari. The menu is packed with comfort classics like chicken wings, loaded fries, and other shareable plates that make every visit feel playful and satisfying.
