About Binondo

Binondo was earlier referred to as “Binundok” because of its low hills. From the 1600s to the 1800s, Binondo was famous for being the Philippines’ commercial hub and the world’s crossroads. It began as a Dominican parish for large Chinese community, and as a merchant’s quarter. Many Chinese labourers and artisans clustered here, contributing their skills to the richness of the district. Hence the nickname “Chinatown”. By the 1860s to 1930s, its location attracted Spanish, German, French, British and American businesses.

In Binondo, many of the country’s firsts were born, from pharmacies, theaters, panciterias, and department stores to the revolutionary Katipunan in 1892. However, one thing remains constant- Binondo was a global city because of its pivotal role in international trade.

Chinatown Museum: Honoring the Colorful History of Binondo

Chinatown Museum is a heritage and community space that shares interesting highlights of Binondo’s history as one of the oldest Chinatowns in the world. The museum’s visual narrative brings alive key social, cultural, economic, political and religious threads. Through topics like the rise of the Chinese mestizo and the birth of the Katipunan stems from the heart of Binondo, its impact has changed the course of the country’s history.

Highlights:

Alcaiceria- The Alcaiceria de San Fernando was contructed in 1752 following a Royal Decree of Ferdinand VI. The area was to be a residence and trade center for transient Chinese. It was a bustling commercial area where merchants traded their wares, like textiles, housewares and various commodities.

Esteros de Binondo- Binondo is an island bound by estuaries or esteros. It is a mix of fresh water from Pasig River and salt water from Manila Bay. The esteros facilitated the transport of goods such as bananas, coconuts and building materials via cascos.

Panaderia- Chinese immigrants were popular cooks. One of their major offerings were goods made from flour such as hopia and siopao. Some well-loved snacks include the mooncake and the nian gao.
